Department Chair
Department of Computer Science
Michigan Technological University
Michigan Technological University invites applications and nominations for
the position of Chair of the Department of Computer Science.
The chair will be expected to build on a strong undergraduate
degree program and continue the development of graduate education and
research programs.
About the Department
The Computer Science Department has 325 undergraduate majors in three
BS degree programs, Computer Science, Computer Systems Science, and
Software Engineering, and it has 50 graduate students in MS and PhD
degree programs in Computer Science and in the Computational Science and
Engineering (CS&E) PhD program. There are 17 full time faculty, five of whom
have received NSF CAREER awards. External funding sources include
NSF, DoD, NASA, IBM, and Hewlett Packard.
Faculty research interests include artificial intelligence,
architecture, compilers, distributed systems, graphics, human computer
interaction, machine learning, parallel computing, software
engineering, scientific visualization, and virtual environments. The
Department has a central role in the interdisciplinary CS&E PhD
program which fosters research in the application of computer science
to engineering and scientific problems. The Computer Engineering,
Bioinformatics, and Cheminformatics BS degree programs require many CS
courses. The Department has particularly close ties to the Department
of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
In 2005 the Department moved into the new Rekhi Computer Science Hall which
houses graduate student and faculty offices, research and instructional labs,
and classrooms. It is also home to the CS&E Research Institute, providing
campus-wide access to high performance computing platforms.
Expectations
The candidate must be committed to high quality instruction at the undergraduate and
graduate levels while helping to build and balance research programs in
core and interdisciplinary areas
of computer science. The Chair is also expected to
continue as an active researcher. The Department's specific goals include:
- increasing the quality, size, and stature of the graduate programs,
- increasing the stature of and funding for the Department's research programs,
- maintaining excellence in undergraduate education,
- attracting and retaining high quality and diverse students and faculty,
- strengthening relationships with industry and alumni.
Candidates are expected to describe how these goals might be addressed.
Qualifications
A candidate is expected to have a professional record of accomplishments
commensurate with the rank of full professor at Michigan Tech. This includes a
record of high quality publications and external funding. A candidate must have
demonstrated administrative, supervisory, or leadership experience and have
good interpersonal skills. It is also desirable for the candidate to have
experience as a representative of an administrative unit, experience supervising
PhD students, and experience with faculty development.
About Michigan Tech
The University has approximately 7,000 students and 400 faculty
with educational and research programs that emphasize technological problems in all
aspects of life, ranging from traditional scientific and engineering disciplines to
less traditional areas, such as Humanities and Fine Arts.
In addition to the present search, strategic faculty hiring initiatives with up to
ten new positions in "Next Generation Energy Systems" and "Health: Basic Sciences,
Technologies, and Medical Informatics" are in their second year. Qualified
candidates are encouraged to send a separate application, following the
"How to Apply" guidelines.
Michigan Tech is an ADVANCE institution, one of a limited number of universities in
receipt of NSF funds in support of our commitment to increase diversity and the
participation and advancement of women in STEM.
Michigan Tech is located in Michigan's scenic Upper Peninsula and is
bounded by Lake Superior and nearby forests. The community offers year-round
recreational and cultural opportunities. This environment, combined with a
competitive compensation package, provides an excellent quality of life.
How to Apply
Applications must include a vita, list of references, and a cover letter
that addresses the candidate's professional qualifications and administrative
philosophy. Applications received by November 15, 2010, are assured of full
consideration. Applications must be submitted by email to CSchairSearch@mtu.edu.
